Playlists let you manage the content of a specific group of screens or your entire network at once, so you don’t have to edit them one by one.
There are two ways to use playlists to manage the content of multiple screens, depending on what you would like to do:
- Display exactly the same content on all screens or a group of screens
- Display a mix of content unique to a specific screen and clips shared by multiple screens
Tip: Ideally, you should have a good idea from the get-go of which screens and zones will be playing the same content and build the structure of your network around these shared playlists.
Note: In addition to the method described below, it is also possible to add content to multiple displays using the advanced distribution module. The flexibility of this module makes multiple screen management incredibly easy, allowing you to share content on any screen, regardless of the structure programmed into the system at the project outset (different from the method outlined in this article).
Display exactly the same content on all screens or a group of screens
To batch-edit the content of all your screens at the same time, they must all be assigned to the same playlist. For example, if you have 10 screens, you could have a playlist called “Central list” and pair it with all your screens. In this example, if you modify the “Central list,” the change would show on all screens.
- Screens 1–10: Show the content of the “Central list” playlist
If these 10 screens had multiple zones, you would have to decide whether to show the same content in a given zone on all your screens and display unique content for the other zones. For example, if you had two zones on each of your screens, you could share the content as follows:
- Screen 1:
- Zone 1: Shows the content for the “Central list” playlist.
- Zone 2: Shows the content unique to the playlist assigned to this Zone 2.
- Screen 2:
- Zone 1: Shows the content for the “Central list” playlist.
- Zone 2: Shows the content unique to the playlist assigned to this Zone 2.
- Screen 3:
- Zone 1: Shows the content for the “Central list” playlist.
- Zone 2: Shows the content unique to the playlist assigned to this Zone 2.
Display a mix of content unique to a specific screen and clips shared by multiple screens
Let’s use the same example with 10 screens and the “Central list” playlist. Your content might look like this:
- Screen 1: Shows the unique content assigned to this playlist.
- Screen 2: Shows the unique content assigned to this playlist + content from the “Central list” playlist.
- Screen 3: Shows the unique content assigned to this playlist + unique content assigned to this playlist for Screen 1.
If each of the 10 screens are divided up in multiple zones, you might want to show the same content in one zone in every screen along with unique content for the other zones. For example, if you had two zones in each of your screens, you would be able to share the content as such:
- Screen 1:
- Zone 1: Shows the content unique to the playlist assigned to this Zone 1.
- Zone 2: Shows the content unique to the playlist assigned to this Zone 2.
- Screen 2:
- Zone 1: Shows the content unique to the playlist assigned to this Zone 1.
- Zone 2: Shows the content unique to the playlist assigned to this Zone 2 of screen 1.
- Screens 3–10:
- Zone 1: Shows the content for the “Central list” playlist.
- Zone 2: Shows the content unique to the playlist assigned to this Zone 2.
Detailed example
To manage your content and playlists centrally, please follow the steps below, each of which is covered in detail in a separate article:
- Creating a playlist
- Assigning a playlist to a zone on your screen OR overwriting the playlist assigned to the zone you wish to manage centrally OR add a clip in a playlist in an other playlist.
- Accessing the management features of your playlists.
- Managing this playlist.
Important: Remember – all changes will be made to all screens sharing the same playlist.
